Abstract: Parental alcoholism is a major issue in the United States today because of the integral role that parents play in the lives and development of their children. Prior research shows a positive relationship between parental alcoholism and offspring alcohol use disorders. This study uses data from 3,704 respondents of Wave 1 of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC), only examining the responses of those who have at least one parent living in the household. The respondents’ history of alcohol use disorders were based on official alcohol diagnoses, while parental alcohol history and family income were reported by the respondents. The results of the study confirmed that parental alcoholism is positively associated with child alcohol use disorders and established family income as significantly associated with offspring alcoholism prior to the last 12 months.
