Abstract: Since its inception in 1990, the 1033 Program has enabled the Department of Defense to recuperate its expenditures by selling surplus military equipment to law enforcement agencies. While an extensive body of literature suggests that such measures do not result in higher levels of security, military equipment and tactics have become increasingly ubiquitous in American policing doctrine. Situated amidst domestic conditions characterized by efforts to further militarize law-enforcement, this study examines the effects of class and political orientations on support for such violent methods using data from the 2021 General Social Survey. Bivariate analyses demonstrate a strong positive relationship between a respondent’s income and support for violent policing tactics. Multivariate analyses corroborate these findings, noting that political orientations have a stronger positive relationship with these tactics.
