Abstract
Police discrimination has long been an issue around the world and in the United States. Discrimination in traffic stops has been a particularly significant issue. Racial discrimination in traffic stops has been studied, but there is a need for more information around the effects of age and gender as well. This is an important issue to bring attention to because doing so can lead to resolving the problems at play in our society. This study aims to answer 2 main questions. First, what is the relationship between race, sex, and age and vehicle searches during traffic stops? Second, do sex and age moderate the likelihood of traffic stops differently across racial groups? The CT Traffic Study is a data set that collected information on every CT traffic stop in 2022. By analyzing relevant variables with statistical testing, such as Chi-Square and Regression, conclusions can be drawn. There appears to be a significant relation between vehicle searches and race, vehicle searches and gender, and vehicle searches and age. This information is important because it can be used to answer the questions of this study. Additionally, these answers provide more needed information in the field of study and will help to paint a more detailed picture of discrimination in traffic stops.
