Abstract: In 2022, 19% of U.S. residents aged 16 or older reported police contact, including 12.4 million traffic stops. Research indicates racial disparities in traffic stop arrests, with socioeconomic context potentially influencing outcomes. This study examines the association between driver race, town median income, and arrests using 2022 Connecticut police department traffic stop data reported to the Institute for Municipal and Regional Policy. Overall, Hispanic drivers had the highest arrest rates across most income brackets, while Black drivers had higher arrest rates than White drivers in select income ranges. Town median income showed a weak, non-significant negative association with arrests. Findings suggest persistent racial disparities independent of income, highlighting the need to explore other local socioeconomic factors.
