Abstract: This study uses data from the CFPB Financial Well Being survey to examine how financial well being and psychological stress relate to materialistic values. Materialism was measured with a brief three item index and modeled as a standardized score, with financial well being and stress also standardized. Bivariate analyses and a weighted linear regression show that higher financial well being is modestly associated with lower materialism, while higher stress is modestly associated with higher materialism, suggesting that both perceived financial security and psychological strain play small but meaningful roles in shaping materialistic orientations.
